Siegfried Lodwig's Flowers and Plants for October 2021 - January 2022
My many plants breaking dormancy in the greenhouse right now (and some of those are also pushing out buds) remind me that it's time to finish the story of 2021 because 2022 is starting, now. I'm not sure just how dormant things have been. As nearly as I could tell, many plants, especially my tall columnar types, never went to sleep at all. Global warming seems to be accelerating. So far, this winter season, the outside night temperature has been around 10 F (-12 C) for a ten-day stretch at xmas time, and we are now having a few nights (2 or 3) of the same. Almost all the other winter nights have been around 20 F (-6 C). This compares to a few years ago of having many winter nights regularly hitting around 0 F (-18 C) and always having a spike or two down to -10 F (-23 C). Lots of cacti not known for being hardy in New Mexico will soon be labeled as "hardy" in our plant sale at our annual shows.
