The solution is to grow some from seed, but keep them in a tiny soil volume - I like the cubic-inch cells. They will actually flower. When you want to see a bigger show, just drop a plant into the size pot you want. No matter how long the plant has been stunted in that tiny pot, it will rapidly grow to fill the new bigger pot, and flower more. (Remember that "rapidly" in cactus-speak is a year or two.) The above plant is in a 2.5" (6 cm) pot. Note that the flowers are just as spectacular. They also display for a couple of weeks, each flower for a couple of days. When the plant gets too grabby, pitch it, or give it away. Bring up one of the understudies for another run. Or do the transplant thing just described every year. That way you have a continuous supply of small jewels every year, and you won't have cactus pieces hanging off your clothes.   (018/112)
