Haageocereus sp.     11/5/18
This is another sporadically flowering genus for me. Maybe this reflects their habitat in Peru, which is close to the equator. I've only seen apical flowers, as here. I missed the first two flowers and caught the third. I've only seen flowers that open at night and close some time the following day. I include this picture because it's uncommon to see a Haageocereus flower. My plants are around 40 years old. This plant is about 2" (5 cm) in diameter and about 5' (1.5 m) tall. About 50 species (I think!) of Haageocereus have been described over the years, but I'm not sure that there are so many. David Ferguson has expressed the opinion that a careful review of the genus might settle down to two or three species. I've only seen reddish flowers as here or much bigger white flowers. Are these the two species?   (09/24)
