Mammliiaria microcarpa (?)     1/28/17
This could be a different species (wrightii? grahamii?). The red fruits form internally and are pushed out of the plant body when ripe, a strategy (?) for making sure that nothing disturbs the formation of viable seeds. The fruit is edible, but not particularly tasty. All cactus fruit is edible, but some are not palatable. Some are quite good. Look out for “dragon fruit” in some specialty markets, especially Chinese or Vietnamese markets. These weigh over a pound and are tasty.   (14/24)
