Something ate the spines!
I’ve been telling you for years that spines are not protection for cacti. Look carefully. One recent night something ate the spines on the left side of the plant. I’ve trapped (killed) four deer mice among my cacti since then. The damn rabbits are also eating my cacti. With the return of rain this year, there has been an exponential increase of rabbits. (25/40)
